Unexpected response code return from Exchange with SSL
Solution Problem
When making a secure (SSL) connection to a Microsoft Exchange server on port 995 you receive the error "Unexpected response code returned from server".

Solution
When making a secure connection to an Exchange server you must configure the Email Command Server to use TLS v1 when making the connection. The steps below detail how to configure the Email Command Server to use TLS v1.

NOTE: You must be running Email Command Server 4.2.39 or higher in order for these changes to work.

NOTE: These steps involve modifying the system registry, making incorrect changes to your system registry can make your computer unstable.

  1. On the Start menu, click Run, type regedt32, and then click OK to start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate following subkeys (depending on whether you installed MSDE as the default MSDE instance or as a named instance):
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Servantix\Email Command Server\POP
  3. In the left pane right click on POP and select New -> String Value
  4. Rename the new string value Options
  5. Double-click the new Options string value and set the Value Data to 1
  6. In the left page again right click on POP and select New -> String Value
  7. Rename the new string value SecureProtocol
  8. Double-click the new SecureProtocol string value and set the Value Data to 8
  9. Exit the Registry Editor
